Palladius (ca. 363–425) wrote this account, named for the imperial chamberlain to whom it was dedicated, Lausus, in 419 of his experiences among spiritual leaders in Syria, Egypt, and Palestine. Reporting his year with the monks of the Nitrian region he tells of some five thousand monks throughout the area with seven bakeries to feed them. They use wine, too, and wine is sold.

In a reversal of roles, this secular businessman carried on practices of hospitality for the monks at Nitria. His hospitality included acts of restoration, caring for the sick. He even designated a successor to continue his ministry.
